Do You Have A Lawn to Mow??
The aforementioned is a simple question, but do you? I use this question with my students in the early stages of our in-car sessions. The point – don’t drive in a hurry. Whether you’re late for work, an appointment, or simply impatient, being in a hurry when driving dramatically increases your risk of a crash, injures yourself and others, and can result in tragic consequences.
When you’re in a hurry:
- Reaction time is reduced. You have less time to notice hazards or react to other drivers.
- The severity of collisions increases. Crashes at higher speeds result in far more severe injuries and fatalities.
- Aggressive maneuvers become common. Rushed drivers are much more likely to run red lights, tailgate, and make risky lane changes.
What can you do?
- Plan ahead: Allow extra time to reach your destination.
- Resist the urge to speed: Saving a few minutes isn’t worth the risk to your life or others.
- Be mindful: Stay aware of your speed and the temptation to rush, especially during commute hours or when running late.
- Set an example: Model calm, safe driving for friends and family, discouraging haste behind the wheel.
